Tremaine Aldon Neverson (born November 28, 1984), better known by his stage name Trey Songz, is an American recording artist, producer and actor. He has released three studio albums: I Gotta Make It, Trey Day and Ready.1984–2004: Early life Songz was born Tremaine Aldon Neverson on November 28, 1984, in Petersburg, Virginia. Raised a military brat, he recognized his vocal abilities at the age of 14. Reluctant to sing, he began performing with encouragement by friends and family. Record producer Troy Taylor discovered Songz during a talent show, which led him to a record contract with Atlantic Records. After graduating from high school, Songz moved to New Jersey to begin his music career. 2005–2006: I Gotta Make It While recording his debut album, Songz released mixtapes under the alias Prince of Virginia. He made an "answer track" to R. Kelly's "Trapped in the Closet", entitled "Open the Closet". His debut album, I Gotta Make It was released in July 2005 by Atlantic Records. It debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200, domestically selling over 40,000 copies in its first week of sales.[citation needed] Songz's debut album yielded the singles Gotta Make It, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 87, and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts at number 21, becoming his first Top 40 R&B hit. Another single, Gotta Go, peaked at number 67 on the Hot 100 and on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, at number 11. 2007–2008: Trey Day Songz released his second studio album, Trey Day, in October 2007. The album again had only featured guest appearances by Bun B, who appeared on the opening track, and Jim Jones. Production on Songz's second album had included, Bryan-Michael Cox, Bei Maejor, R. Kelly, James Harris, Terry Lewis, Andrew Harr, Bernard Freeman, Floyd Hills, alongside Tamir "Nokio" Ruffin, Justin Haro, and M.S. Eriksen. The album debuted at number 11 on the Billboard 200, selling more units than his previous album, I Gotta Make It. The lead single, "Wonder Woman", peaked at number 54 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, but failed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single, "Can't Help but Wait", peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at number two on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart; it became Songz's first-charting R&B single on the R&B charts. "Can't Help But Wait" charted at number 74 on the Billboard Pop 100 in February 2008. The third single off of "Trey Day", "Last Time", peaked on number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100, and at number nine on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. In 2008, Songz was nominated for a BET Award for Best Male R&B Artist. 2009–present: Ready In 2009, "Can't Help but Wait" earned Songz a nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 2009 Grammy Awards ceremony. He announced the upcoming release of his third album, Ready, was released in September 2009. Prior to the release of Ready, Songz released a mixtape titled Anticipation in June 2009 through his blog. This mixtape is the second mixtape released by Trey Songz in 2009, with the first being titled Genesis. Genesis was a collection of Trey Songz first recordings when he was fifteen years old and was released to show his fans the dedication that he had to making a record when he was young. Ready is preceded by the first single, "I Need a Girl". The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, selling 131,000 copies in its first week. The lead single from Ready, the Johnta Austin-penned, "I Need a Girl" which was a hit on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, peaking at number five, and so far peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single, "Successful", featuring Canadian entertainer Drake, peaked at number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, Songz second top 20 hit. The third and fourth singles, "LOL Smiley Face" and "I Invented Sex" also featuring Drake, charted within the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the R&B chart. The fifth single, "Say Aah", which featured rapper Fabolous. It peaked at number nine on the Hot 100 and was certified Platinum, becoming Songz' highest-charting single. The album was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 52nd Grammy Awards, but lost out to Beyoncé's I Am... Sasha Fierce. Songz was the opening act for Jay-Z on Jay-Z Fall Tour. On April 1, 2010, he recorded an episode of MTV Unplugged at Manhattan's NEP Studio 33. On the album's first official single, "I Need A Girl," Stargate (Tor Erik Hermansen and Mikkel S. Eriksen) deliver their signature guitar-led production. The Norwegian-born, NYC-based pair previously worked on Trey's Grammy-nominated "Can't Help But Wait," and decided to revisit their magic on "READY." From the street single, "Brand New," to his self-described male version of Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You" in "One Love," the Virginian draws on a range of influences to craft an album that will thrill his longtime fans and happily surprise all newcomers to the Trey Songz story. Indeed, with its blend of hip-hop, R&B, and pop ? exemplified by tracks like "Black Roses," where Trey croons over a distorted guitar ? "READY" demonstrates his growth on every front. The third time around, Trey displays a new vocal maturity combined with his renowned ability to twist notes and keys effortlessly, while presenting an increasing breadth of subject matter. "With every move you make you have something to prove," says Trey. "There's always room for improvement. I'm growing, as a person, as an artist, and as a man. My clothes fit differently, my braids are missing? I'm changing as a person and the music is the better for it." Born Tremaine Aldon Neverson, Trey was raised as a military brat, with his family eventually settling in Petersburg, Virginia. Ironically, as a teen he wasn't particularly interested in singing. Only after continuous encouragement from his mother, and drawing on his grandmother's example as a devoted church choir member, Trey entered a local talent show at 14 years old. He won that competition and several more, eventually amassing 19 trophies. At 15, Trey crossed paths with producer Troy Taylor, who's worked with everyone from Boyz II Men to Lionel Richie, and Taylor immediately recognized Trey's talent. After high school, at Taylor's invitation Trey moved to New Jersey, where he developed his vocal, writing, and production skills. Trey soon found himself driving from the Garden State across the river to New York City. As he learned to record songs, Trey completed a proverbial musical boot camp, absorbing music by artists like Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Steely Dan during his commute between the two states. To earn his keep, the Virginian worked as Taylor's vocal production assistant and transformed that experience into his debut album, "I GOTTA MAKE IT," after signing with Atlantic Records in 2003. On the business end, Trey began his production company, Songbook, in 2004 with Taylor. The company houses several producers but Trey doesn't want to overstep his boundaries or stunt anyone else's creative growth. "We've been honing Songbook," says Trey carefully. "We make sure that we don't keep people from what they have to do. I don't want to get the talent if I don't have a place for it. A lot of people sign artists that they'll never release, just to have them. I'd rather let you find your own way." Among Trey's numerous activities, he ? along with fellow Atlantic artist Flo Rida ? wrote and produced a street-smart rendition of "Jingle Bells" especially for clothing giant GAP, which proved to be a sensation during the 2008 Christmas season. In August 2008, Trey added the philanthropic organization Songz For Peace to his repertoire, launching the charity with community activist Noonie Ward in Chicago's crime-ridden Southside before bringing his message to his native Petersburg. The youth-centered organization, which attracted 500 kids at its opening event, travels to different cities speaking to teens about the dangers of violence and life's positive opportunities. Songz for Peace is scheduled to visit several more cities across America this year, including Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Baltimore. "The violence within the youth is rising at an alarming rate," says Trey earnestly. "I get to speak on that, and children listen to me." Deftly balancing and separating his roles as artist, businessman, and philanthropist, Trey has delivered his best work to date with "READY." "I've always been the underdog of my class," says Trey. "But this time nothing can stop me from achieving all that I want."
