Matt Cardle (born Matthew Sheridan Cardle, 15 April 1983) is a British singer-songwriter who rose to fame after he won the seventh series of The X Factor where he received a £1 million recording contract with Syco Music. His cover of Biffy Clyro's "Many of Horror", renamed "When We Collide", was released as his debut single immediately after the show had finished airing. It sold 439,000 copies in its first week, becoming the UK Christmas number one, despite several Facebook campaigns to claim the number one position./nCardle was born in Southampton, Hampshire, England, to David and Jennifer Cardle (neé Horner) on 15 April 1983. When he was two, he was diagnosed with Wilms' tumour, but recovered after having one of his kidneys removed. Cardle has had jobs as a bricklayer, postman, milkman and most recently he worked as a painter and decorator. Before applying to The X Factor, he was member in 2007 of the alternative rock / pop band Darwyn. In 2009, he became the frontman and guitarist of a rock band called Seven Summers. They released a self-titled album Seven Summers on 22 January 2010 and performed live on Sue Marchant's BBC radio program on 8 December 2009./nThe X Factor/nIn 2010 Cardle auditioned for the seventh series of The X Factor, singing Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" and was put through to the "bootcamp" stage. He made it through bootcamp and then got to "Judges houses" in the "Boys" category with Dannii Minogue as his mentor. On the first live show, Cardle sang "When Love Takes Over" and received the second highest number of public votes to make it through to week 2. From week 2, he received the most votes every week. Fellow contestant, Mary Byrne, came first in week 1. On 11 December, Cardle duetted with Rihanna, singing "Unfaithful" and won the show the following night, receiving 44.61% of the vote.
