Gordon Brown will today announce that the General Election will be held on May 6, according to Labour sources.The Prime Minister will visit the Queen and ask for a dissolution of Parliament to take place on Monday April 12./nIt will mark the official start of an election campaign which the polls suggest is likely to be the hardest fought in many years./nWhile YouGov's final poll before the announcement puts the Tories 10 points ahead, an ICM survey for the Guardian has Labour as close as four points behind their main rivals./nMr Brown is expected to say that securing the economic recovery; protecting frontline public services whilst cutting the deficit in half and renewing British politics will be at the heart of Labour's election campaign./nLast night he said: "The people of this country have fought too hard to get Britain on the road to recovery to allow anybody to take us back on the road to recession"./nMr Brown told the Daily Mirror: "Just think, in a few weeks from now if you were seeing money taken out of the economy by a Conservative government which didn't understand you had to secure the recovery./n"It's too big a risk. It's too great a danger. It's too much of a threat."/nTory leader David Cameron is expected to make a statement shortly after Mr Brown calls the election./nHe is will say his party will fight on behalf of the "Great Ignored"./n"They're good, decent people - they're the people of Britain and they just want a reason to believe that anything is still possible in our country./n"This election is about giving them that reason, giving them that hope./n"That's the Conservatives mission - that's my mission - for the next 30 days and I can't wait to get started."/nLiberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said: "Today is the beginning of the end for Gordon Brown./n"Now is the time for all those people who want real change and real fairness in Britain to choose something different and turn to the Liberal Democrats."/nMr Clegg will address party staff this morning before getting his own campaigning under way.
