Description:
Toddler Chokes to Death from Window Blind Cord Strangulation March 22, 2010/nA 2-year-old boy from Long Island, N.Y., died after becoming entangled on cords from Venetian blinds in his home on Friday, March 19, 2010./nThe father discovered the boy, Brandon McCarthy, not breathing and alone in a room in the family’s home on Friday afternoon, after he had been strangled by the cord./nThe father was administering CPR when the ambulance arrived, but Brandon died in the intensive care unit at Stony Brook University Medical Center on Saturday afternoon./nWindow coverings with cords, including inner cords, have been identified by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) as one of the top five hidden hazards in the home. The CPSC has issued recalls on more than five million window coverings in the past, including vertical and horizontal blinds, Roman shades, and roll-up blinds. The agency recommends that households with children switch to cordless window coverings and keep cribs, beds, and furniture far away from any window coverings with cords./nThe CPSC notes that window blinds sold prior to November 2000 have inner cords that can be pulled to form a loop, and consumers are urged to repair these blinds immediately with a free repair kit from the Window Covering Safety Council, available at 800-506-4636./n'Ban Killer Blinds That Strangled Our Son' Tom Parmenter, North Of England correspondent The parents of a toddler who was strangled by the cord of a window blind are demanding the Government bans them to stop the tragedy happening to another family. Three-year-old Harrison Joyce was at home in Lichfield, Staffordshire, last month when he caught his neck in the cord to the blind./nHis family desperately tried to revive him but could not save him./n"Every precaution we could think of we did" said dad, Scott./nHe told Sky News: "What we didn't realise was we had roughly 50 of these killer blinds in the windows and that is exactly what they are."/nIncredibly another 16-month-old youngster Lillian Bagnall-Lambe died in a similar fashion just five days later at her home in nearby Stafford./nThe Joyce family say their research since the tragedy has shown five window blind-related deaths in the UK and Ireland in the last 12 months./nHarrison Joyce/nHarrison was three when he died/nThey are now campaigning to urge other parents to "cut the cord" on blinds already in people's homes and for manufacturers to be banned from making cords that could pose a danger to children./nIn a statement, the British Blind and Shutter Association insisted their members all adhere to a voluntary code that incorporates child safety./nThe statement also said that the whole industry should "ensure that the products they supply conform to the European Standard and that appropriate advice is provided to consumers to aid their choice"./nBut the Joyce family would like to see the Government act to outlaw looped cords on window blinds./n"Our advice is to look around your home from a child's point of view," said Jo Stagg from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents./n"That can really help you to spot hazards that you might have missed such as a looped blind cord hanging at your waist height which is at the height of your toddler's neck.
