Carlton Grant, better known to you and I as Spragga Benz has had a truly abundant life
thus far – starting in the business around the early 90’s when he and Mark Myrie (better
known to us as ‘Gargamel’ – more so as Buju Banton) were {and still are} firm friends.
Buju (on a dare) introduced Spragga to a world that was soon to become his Oyster!
Spragga went on to master the dance floor of  90’s dancehall – ‘Coulda Deal’ being one his
more prominent early offerings (and one of my personal favourites from my raving days)!
Following on with smash hit after smash hit including Dem Flap, Tings Ah Gwaarn and
Jack It Up to name but a few....
An artist that can hold the stage like so few are capable of these days... The Benz is holding his
own and still riding the wave!  Something that not many artists have these days is staying
power!  Spragga has more than proven his prowess – shown in his love and passion for what
he does!
The undoubtable ‘chooon’ that comes from his camp time and time again – whether it be the
more hardcore ‘Ragga’ of the 90’s or the more spiritual feel of this artists music of late!  Spragga
never lets us down!
Having been through a pain and sadness in recent years that most parents dread – losing his beloved son ‘Carlton Grant
Jnr’ in such cruel, malevolent circumstances – Spragga looks to his creator for guidance and strength and is of the belief that
those that have wronged will receive the punishment that is surely due to them.
Carlton Grant Jnr was also cast in the movie ‘Shottas’, playing  the character ‘Wayne’ as a youngster.  Spragga himself
played the same character as an adult.
The film was and still is a great achievement for Jamaican culture!  Putting Jamaica on the map for many.
Starring alongside the two Mr Grant’s were Ky-mani Marley, Paul Campbell (Dancehall Queen – ‘Walk and Live, Talk and...
‘ well you know the rest), Louie Rankin and Wyclef Jean.
The film portrays the high profile lifestyle of two Jamaican men struggling to keep that middle line of being one with the
people, but still able to call on the bigger heads for any movements that they need made quickly... the result on the surface –
a drug filled, gun running hit – but look a little deeper and there is moral and meaning to this story!!  In my opinion – this
film is ‘big, bad, massive and hard’!
Spragga is a man of many talents and has done collaboration after collaboration with an unbelievable number of industry
greats including Cham, Stephen Marley, Nas, Wyclef, Bow Wow plus many more!
Among them was the hit single with rapper Foxy Brown.  The massive hit ‘Oh yeah’ samples  - both Toots and the Maytals
’54-46’ and Bob Marley ‘Rise It Up’.  The tune was a major breakthrough for Spragga and gained him worldwide
commercial acknowledgement and those that had thought he was just a reggae artist were drawn into the world – which the
rest of us know well – the man can do great things!!  It is what it is!
More recently Spragga has been working with Red Square and is currently promoting his new album ‘Shotta Culture’ due
for release very soon!
Spragga is a great believer of giving back to his roots and is well known for his donations and involvement in many charity
movements.
It’s not easy to have staying power in this business, but Spragga Benz has shown us that he is here to stay and stay he will!!
